Rene Arceo • Boat of Hope, 2018 Woodcut

The use of a canoe, with a healthy fully-grown tree, symbolizes the precarious and fragile conditions our environment finds itself. While the canoe is not yet sinking, the strong and constant water currents makes it helplessly titter totter. While the broad body of water provides sustenance to life (tree) likewise, the currents’ constant motion could tip and drown the tree taking life away. This is a balancing act of unnecessary conditions created by humans and whose myopia impedes them to see clearly the potential consequences of an unbalanced nature.
