Poli Marichal • Cigarrón, 2017 Linocut, watercolor and chine cole

In Puerto Rican superstition, there is the belief if a bumblebee hovers close to you, it’s probably bringing news of some sort. The short verse: “Cigarrón, cigarrón, que traes noticias, si son buenas, dímelo, si son malas, no”, is a chant to avoid bad news and bring on the good ones. The bumblebee depicted in this print is the extraordinary Augochlora buscki, found only around Yauco, Puerto Rico, where I’m from. The print also alludes to the political and economic crisis that has struck Puerto Rico. The green bumblebee is a plea for hope.
