Marianne Sadowski • My Roots are in the Waters (Homage to Berta Cáceres), 2018 Linocut/Pronto Plate

Water is a human right but for many indigenous communities, it has been a constant fight to be able to access clean water as well as to protect it. Berta Cáceres was a Honduran activist and indigenous leader, that fought for the rights of the Lenca people, the ancestral guardians of the rivers. In a grassroots campaign, they stopped the building of the Agua Zarca Dam at the Gualcarque River, which was going to have a dramatic impact for sustainable living for the people from Rio Blanco. She was killed in 2016, but her roots just got stronger, inspiring resistance to a new generation of defenders of the earth, water and corn.
