Bibiana Suarez • ¡Cuidado, que si te barro los pies te quedas jamona! (Careful, if I sweep your feet, you will become a spinster!), Linocut, 2016

My image illustrates a superstition rooted in my childhood memories while growing up in Puerto Rico. My mother and my grandmother both used to playfully chase my sister and I with their broom while sweeping the house warning us that if they were to sweep our feet, we will never marry. As products of a male chauvinistic culture, my sister and I would run away in fear that the superstition would become a reality in the future. Now in retrospect, Mami and Mamá were simply trying to get us out of their way with the teasing!
