Alexander Sutphen • Curse of the Billy Goat, Linocut

I am not a Cubs fan, but I was raised by a Cubs fan. As a kid I was told of the “Curse of the Billy Goat” — the legend that a man was kicked out of Wrigley Field for bringing his pet goat to a game, and in retaliation he cursed the Cubs so that they would never win another World Series. In my childhood home, the billy goat represented futility in all its forms, the hope to overcome that demonic presence that binds you and your eternal failure in that struggle. That eternal struggle ended this year (2016), and thus the curse has been broken.
